Is there a relationship or an association between jewelry and pearls and Baroque and/or Rococco art?

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Is there a relationship between pearls and the Baroque? Or jewelry and the Baroque? Ditto the Rococo.
If so, can you name some artists and these works?

Both baroque and rococo art are linked quite closely with jewelry and – definitely with the pearl. "Perla Barroca" means irregular pearl in Portuguese. The root of both "Baroque" and "Rococo" can be seen in this word and today an irregular pearl is called a "Baroque pearl."

For an detailed piece on this – because your question interested me – I did an entire post about it. Hopefully it helps. There are examples of the art and different reasons as to why jewelry was such an issue during the era.

What is the best way to remove gunk from earrings?

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

I often wear the same earrings day in and day out for months on end. Because I shower with them in, a lot of build-up occurs.
What is the best way to remove this? My mom's always said to soak them in hydrogen peroxide but I thought that was just a disinfectant? Plus, one time I soaked all of my earrings and it ruined a lot of them. Why would that be?

Electrolytic Cleaning Solution:

Ingredients:
¼ cup baking soda
¼ cup salt
¼ cup liquid dish soap
½ gallon of water

Equipment:
Large pot
Aluminum foil
Plastic spoon
Stove top
colander or strainer
towel

Take a large pot, such as a spaghetti pot, and line the inside with aluminum foil. Pour all of the ingredients into the pot and stir with your plastic spoon. Collect the sterling silver jewelry you want to clean and count each item so you know the total number you put into the pot. Place them into the solution. Bring this to a low boil for a few minutes. Then turn off the burner and let it sit for another couple of minutes. Then using the colander or strainer, pour out the solution. Rinse with cold water. Count your items as you place them on a towel to dry. Make sure you’ve account for all your jewelry before you throw away the aluminum. It will be dirty because the oxides on your jewelry were transferred to it. Your sterling silver jewelry should now look like new.

What are the most common saint necklaces worn?

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

For those who wear patron saint necklaces, what is the name of the saint. I wear St.Jude and was wondering what the most common ones worn are.

St. Jude, St. Christopher, St. Anthony, St. Michael, St. Sebastian, St. Patrick, and St. Francis are all very popular. So are Ss. Cecilia, Mary Magdalene, Anne, Elizabeth and Rita. St. Rita, like St. Jude, is considered to one of the patrons of impossible causes.

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

I have tons of jewelry from places like forever 21 and I just have no idea how to organize it! Like I have tons bracelets, bangles, necklaces, rings, earrings and tons of other accessories and I need a good way to organize them that will also like nice and not cluttery any good ideas?

Over your desk or on the inside wall of you closet, get either drill-in hooks or the decorative ones that you can stick up there, and hang all of your long necklaces off of them. Rings and earrings put in a jewlery box or in an earring tree. Bangles put around a skinny vase

How much is my 98g 18K gold bracelet worth?

Tuesday, April 28th, 2009

I have a white gold bracelet from the 1970's. It is 18 carat gold (white gold I think). I have looked on eBay and can't see one that is as heavy as this as it is 98 grammes. Any gold entrepreneurs out there who can give me an idea on how much I am likely to get for it and the best place to sell it?

the best way is to take it to a jeweller and get a free valuation done. Dont take it to a pawn brokers, they give you nothing. you are more likely to get a good price for its scrap value.

How did jewelry enter human civilizations?

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

The oldest known jewelry dates to 100,000 BP, from Tata, Hungary (engraved shells, for decorative purposes, probably stringed together)…

This implies 2 things:

1) People had free-time.

2) Pre-humans, such as Neanderthal, had the capacity and inspiration to produce jewelry as well (Cro-Magnon didn't enter Europe until about 40,000 years ago).

Hey i have 6 gauged ears and i got some new earrings that have a bigger end so how do i get them in?

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

If they're single-flared you just put the "smaller" end in first. If they're double-flared you need to put them in at an angle. If they won't fit, you need more time at 6g or you need 8g of the same style [since the ends are more wide than the actual wearable area].

What are the best ways of cleaning jewelry?

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

I have a white gold and diamond earrings and necklace set that I would like to clean. I also have a white gold and blue topaz ring. What are good, inexpensive ways to clean the jewelry without damaging it? The necklace has a very fine chain.
Thanks!

White gold won't tarnish although it can still get dirty. White gold is rhodium plated (as in nature 'white gold' is actually grey) and this plating is thick and will last many years. If the metal is still nice and silvery-looking then just give it a good clean.

In a basin, add some just-warm water and a few drops of mild detergent. Then with an old toothbrush, thoroughly scrub all along the chain, and pay particular attention the settings themselves as this is where dirt will accumulate. Clean around and behind the settings until you can see through to the back of the stone and it is nice and clean (providing the settings are open!).

Blue topaz is usually irradiated to get it to the lovely blue colour and is softer than diamond, so avoid harsh chemicals, abrasive solutions (eg toothpaste is often recommended to clean diamonds) and extreme heat/cold.

What are the best jewelry party companies?

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

I would like to sign up to sell jewelry through one of the home party distributor's like Lia Sophia. I have looked up several and would love to know if anyone knows more about which ones are above average in pay, initial investment and overall success. I am considering Lia Sophia or Inspiranza. Thanks for your help!

I have also looked into this, and found Premier Designs to be one of the top I've seen. I did considerable research on many companies.

The founders of the company are of impeccable integrity, and everyone just loves the jewelry designs. The pieces are easy to sell.

My co-worker is a distributor, and her parties are always very profitable, and fun. They pay 50% commissions.

I asked her to let me know when the company runs a great incentive for signing up new distributors. I will likely hop on board at that time. My own research, coupled with watching the ease of her rapid success, has helped me make my decision to join this particular company.

No matter what company you decide on, wait until they run a really great special to entice new distributors to join. Every company has them.

Here's to your new business!

Hope this helped you.
