I am buying beads by the 1/4 kilogram.. how many would make a pound?

Wednesday, August 12th, 2009

There are 1/4 kilograms per package.. how many packages do I need to buy to make a pound?

1 kilogram = 2.2 pounds. so 1/4 kildgram = 1/4 X 2.2 pounds, or .55 pounds. Therefore 2 packages = 1.1 pounds. So, 2 packages is slightly more than a pound.

how can i get rid of old-metal-jewelry-smell?

Monday, August 10th, 2009

I bought this necklace from H&M just last summer and it’s been in a box in my closet since then. I pulled it out and it smells really bad, like rotten pennies, and the smell rubbed off on my hands. what causes that? and is there a way to get rid of the smell without ruining my necklace?

What you are smelling is probably oxidation. At Walmart in the jewelry section they have jewelry cleaning cloths for about $4. Get one and follow the directions, rubbing off the oxidation and polishing it at the same time. I don’t know what H&M is, but it sounds like your necklace is made of "mystery metal" rather than silver or gold. I’d stay away from the liquid jewelry cleaners.

How do I get rid of my 8 year old daughter infection on her ear lobe from her earrings?

Monday, August 10th, 2009

We’ve tried peroxide, rubbing alcohol, and now bactene. It has not seemed to get worse but it has really not gotten much better.

The alchol and hydrogen peroxide should work. Make sure to use the alchol on the earrings, too.

if this doesn’t help, see what kind of metal it is. some cheap metal simply causes peoples skin to react. The safest are typically stainless steel and gold.

if these still don’t help, I would ask your dr or a dermatologist.

if the piercing is not new, try not having her wearing the earrings for a few days while still treating.

what household items can i use to make my own unique jewelry?

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

i am going to use old keys and buttons, but wht else do you think i could use that i can find around the house?

You can do so much with common household items, particulary when it comes to making beads. Make jewelry:

Out of paper handmade beads:

You can also use coins and make a unique necklace.
If you’re going to make a penny (or any other coin) necklace, there are two good ways of doing it.
1. Go to a jewelry store and order a coin holder charm. they put the penny in it and fit it correctly. it is a casing that the penny fits in and it slips onto a necklace like any other charm does. it looks real good. a gold one will run between $30 and $50 but it is worth it and will preserve the coin.
2. If you don’t want to preserve the coin and just want a hole through it, then hold the penny with lineman pliers over a torch flame where you want the hole drilled until the penny glows hot and use an ice pick or a small nail and hammer to make the hole.make sure when you are pushing the ice pick in that the edge of the penny that is hot is placed flat on a non burning surface – do not drill while the Penny is over the flame.if you use the nail and hammer then place the penny on a flat surface, line up the nail where you want the hole and hit the nail with a hammer. you cannot drill straight through on the first go around so you will have to repeat the method of heating and drilling. also, you can use and electric drill with a metal drill bit. metal as in some bits are for wood, metal, or brick. extreme heat is your best method of puncturing metal.

Good luck, and have fun making your jewelry!

What kind of plastic is commonly used for translucent pony beads?

Saturday, August 8th, 2009

I would like to know what kind of plastic is used for clear pony beads. My concerns are with how safe this kind of plastic is to melt. I do not want to end up in a hospital doing an art project.

they wouldn’t the safest thing to melt but you would want to take some cautions. they can produce noxious gas when melted. I couldn’t find anythig online about the type of plastic they are made from.

If I want to start a jewelry business and I want ‘Couture’ as part of the title, does that work?

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

I want to start a jewelry business and I would like to use the word ‘Couture’ as part of the title. I make high quality jewelry with modern and vintage jewelry pieces mixed in. I’ve searched the meaning of couture and come up with fashion design and clothing related, but can it work for jewelry?

Sure you can. You will need to go to your local county clerk’s office to register your name, to make sure you don’t steal anyone else’s registered name. It will probably cost you around $10-$15. And it should remain your ownership for at least 10 years. Good luck! IYou may also need a tax ID #, depending on your age and how you want to sell this jewelry. It is free. Availability Online under State Tax Comptroller.

What size diamond earrings should I get my wife?

Thursday, August 6th, 2009

First of all, they will be everyday wear earrings. Most days, my wife is dressed casually. I am choosing between 1/2 carat TDW or 1 carat TDW. They will be high quality diamonds and probably a round cut. Set in white gold, because a friend told me that makes them sparkle more. Thanks!
They are solitaire earrings. She is petite 5’4".

I agree with the white gold.

I would choose quality over size, though. Go look at the diamonds and make sure they have a high clarity rank as well as the color. I would rather have a flawless 1/2 carat than a 1 carat with imperfections on it.

You’re saying TDW which makes me think these are not solitaire earrings — but clusters? (a lot of small diamonds together) – - if that is the case then I would definitely choose the 1/2 carat. Not as big and can wear every day.
