How do you make beads from shells?

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

Is it possible to make beads out of shells that I’ve found by a lakeshore? Any tips for making the holes and cutting the shells?

Thanks

Yes. I’ve made wind-chime hangers from shells I’ve found on the beach. It’s the same process.

1. Purchase the smallest CHINA drill bit you can locate. Yes it is actually referred to as a "china bit" when you go to buy it. You can also use it to drill plates and then use lamp post and finial to make tiered cookie platters from two fine china plates you could find at a garage sale or purchase to match your good china. You use washers and rubber gaskets between the washers and the china and a screw to put in the bottom. — Lots of uses for your drill bit, so it doesn’t go to waste.
2. Ask your local hardware store where you are purchasing the bit to give you a small piece of 2×4. This should be free from their waste box.
3. Place your shell on the 2×4 and holding firmly with jewelry (rounded tip) pliers, drill a hole where desired. At the base where it is thickest, the hinge area, is the best area to drill — not the thin area which is the outer rim. Be sure to wear safety glasses whenever you drill anything.
4. I use 8mm Fireline, but whatever you require for your jewelry will work — just make sure you are not using material bigger than the hole or it will shred and break either the hole or your line.
5. Try gluing a pearl in a shell for effect if it is going to dangle from your jewelry. The weight of the pearl makes the shell hang nicely
Good luck

How to get rid of the very tiny small bumps like beads on the face?

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

They grow very slowly, each bead has a hole in the center with size of needle tip. I notice there have been more of these beads on my face recently. Not sure what they are but definitely want to get rid of them. Does anyone know what they are and how to treat them?

are they hereditary?

How do you make the holes in pony beads smaller?

Saturday, October 3rd, 2009

i tried melting them but they just set on fire lol. is there like another way to make the holes in pony beads smaller?

Try putting a bit of clay in the middle and put a small hole in the clay. Let the clay harden and your beads will be set and useable

Making glass beads with a torch, is it easy, how long does it take, how much room is needed, cost?

Sunday, September 27th, 2009

I want to make my own beads instead of buying them in the stores. Originality is important to me and so is creativity.

I’m pretty sure your going to want a variance in colors, so you would have to take into account the cost of the different colors of glass rods…
(which by the way I’m guessing solid rods are used, not sure of the diameter and this is usually sold by the pound)

…and the cost for chemicals or substances that can be introduced into the flame with the glass to give it its various colors, copper and silicas are a few.
I’m also wondering what type of torch one would need that would be best suited for your purpose, I was suprised the first time I learned about all the different types of torches that are actually used to create specific flames in glass blowing.
Also different fuels are used depending on the temperature wanted. not sure about for beads but for glass in general furnaces and kilns are also used in the heating and cooling process,
I’m guessing you are not liking the mass produced avaliable beads and the higher premium one might would charge for some of the more unique looking beads. So it would be those factor to compare to whatever prices.
But do remember about the heat your going to generate, think about the place or space that this will take place and if you will want it cooled, if not be prepared to sweat, and you are prolly going to get a burn or two, it come with the territory, and this is why utensils and gloves will be needed for handling,

You mentioned originality and creativity in your question and through out my answer I keep wondering if you have ever introduced yourself to mosaics.

How do u make an illusion necklace without showing crimp beads?

Thursday, September 24th, 2009

Ive seen necklaces that have no sign of crimp beads. Is there another way to make them without using crimp beads? or is there a way to hide them?

Dabs of crazy glue inside the bead! I’ve made several necklaces like this, especially delicate looking ones for brides and bridesmaids.
