How do you make earrings from my polymer clay creations?

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

I wanted to make some earrings using a pair of rabbits i made with clay. Do I glue it onto the earwires or do I poke a hole through it before baking so I can insert the head pin?

There are quite a few ways to attach small polymer clay items to other things, including to earring findings. Basically you can make a hole, or you can put something in the clay that creates a loop.

If you make a hole, the hole can go all the way through the fat part of the item or bead (usually from top to bottom, or could be from side to side), or a hole can be made from front to back (usually in flatter items).

In the first case, you’d usually thread a head pin or an eye pin through the hole from the bottom of the item, then bend the top of the shank sticking out of the hole into a loop shape by hand.
You’d either attach that loop to the loop of a dangle-type earring finding, or you’d attach a jumpring then attach the jump ring to the finding for a bit freer dangle.

In the second case, you’d put a jump ring through the hole, then attach the jumpring to the loop of an earring finding (…or if making a necklace, you might just thread the cording directly through the hole).

You can also create holes before or after hardening the clay… it’s a little easier beforehand though.
You can also "embed" the shortened shank of an eye pin into the top of the clay item before or after hardening the clay… again, it’s a bit easier beforehand.

Rather than describing all those possibilities in detail, I’ll just give you links to the 2 pages at my polymer clay encyclopedia site that have lessons, links to examples, variations, for them:

…click on *Top Loops* for putting shortened eye pins (or eye screws or upside-down U shapes) into the top of a clay item

…click on *Holes Before Baking* or *Holes After Baking* for top-to-bottom or side-to-side holes

And this page has info on creating your own "simple loops" in eye pins or other wires, if you need lessons for that:

You might also want to check out the page where earrings in particular are discussed at my site too:

Fake earrings rusting? How do I get rid of the rust and prevent it from rusting?

Sunday, February 14th, 2010

I bought a pair of silver earrings just a few hours ago and it was the final sale. But I just got home and noticed that one of the earrings is rusting and it’s not really silver anymore. How do I get rid of the rust and change it back to silver? I need to wear them by tomorrow to a friend’s wedding and it’s quite noticeable that one is silver and one is goldish silver..

Try vinegar. Apparently it can take rust of small objects.

How do you fix stud earrings when the backing has fallen off?

Thursday, February 11th, 2010

So I just got these Juicy heart earrings but I think I might have bent one of the earrings straight metal backings on accident and it broke off. Is there a way to fix this with tool(s) or a certain glue?

i think they sell jewelry glue for certain types of metal.
if they are really important earrings to you i would have it
fixed by a professional

if i gauge my ears to a size 14 will my regular sieze earrings fit after without looking funny?

Friday, January 29th, 2010

Generally the holes shrivel up when the gauges aren’t in the ears, sense 14g isnt that much bigger then a rugular ear piercing it shouldn’t be that noticable at all unless someone was actually trying to notice it. Any gauge size much bigger might look a litte funny though. But i’m sure if you put the back on tight enough on the normal earing it’ll stay in fine. Be aware that if you put in regular earings in a gauge, it’ll shrink back to it’s regular size eventually, especially if it’s been stretched recently.

how do you know when your earrings can be removed after piercing ?

Tuesday, January 5th, 2010

i got mine pierced way back in april, but i took it off after a week, so they closed and then i had to get it pierced again the following week . so now i’ve waited for about 3 months and i was wondering how to know when they are ready to be taken off . thx(:

o you have to wait 6-8 weeks, then you can CHANGE them but you have to have a post back earring in your ear for the majority of the time (you can take them out for sports games/practise or watever just put them back in as soon after as possible) for the first 6th months. They are pretty much permanent after that. Also, as the time lengthens since youve gotten them pierced, you can keep them out for longer periods of time. Be careful when you change earrings the first few times as your ears can become infected if the skin is not quite healed yet.

What earrings would match a green pearl necklace?

Thursday, December 31st, 2009

My wedding colors are pink and green. My bridesmaids dresses are pink so I bought them all matching pretty green pearl necklaces for their gifts. But what kind of earings should they wear? Buying them all the same isnt in my budget, and I dont think I should ask them to look for green pearl earrings to match (sounds expensive and hard).

Any suggestions that would look nice?
Haha I know green pearl earrings would match! But im asking for any other alternatives that would look good too!

Have them not wear earrings or go with something neutral like gold or silver balls. Studs only though because it would look funny with non pearl dangling earrings. No earrings would look best, but nobody will notice because they’ll all have their eyes on the bride anyway. Plus nobody would really be able to tell even if they were a serious snob unless they got close to the bridesmaids. Congrats on the wedding! :)

how do i remove stuck earrings?

i got my ears pierced at claires, and now after six weeks i can take them out, and i got the first earring out but the second one wont budge at all, and i’ve been pulling it as hard as i can and it’s STUCK. any tips on how to make it looser? i know they will be stiff because they are designed to be that way, but is there any way i can get them out? i won’t let anybosdy else help.

Try rubbing alcohol. Put some on and around it then try to twist it out.
