How can I start making jewellery?
by adminQuestion by Natalieeex: How can I start making jewellery?
I really love jewellery and when I’m older I plan to study jewellery design, I want to start making some pieces as a hobby, i really like the kitsch style and quirky necklaces and bracelets. I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good way to start making jewellery and any good websites to get some charms from?
Many thanks.

You should really check out Michael’s and Hobby Lobby’s beading sections. they have several books and a wide selection of jewelry making tools and beads. I think Hobby Lobby even offers a jewelry making class.
What do you think? Answer below!
You don’t say what *materials* you’d like to use and you could use just about any material(s) at all to make “kitchy, quirky” necklaces and bracelets, so it’s a little hard to recommend specifics.
If you’re only wanting to buy charms and findings to *assemble* into jewelry though, and you just want to find out how to attach things together, here are some places to check out:

A lot of the “charms” around nowadays for the younger crowd are being made with polymer clay (to mention just one possible material). And polymer clay can be made into items/beads/charms of any size, shape and color, as well as any pattern and in any style (from kitchy to elegant).
If you think you might be interested in making small items with polymer clay to use for jewelry, check out some of these pages at my polymer clay “encyclopedia” site for loads of examples, lessons, tips, etc:
You could start with this page for making lots of small “miniature” items:
http://glassattic.com/polymer/miniatures.htm
…or perhaps start on the Table of Contents page to see everything that’s covered at the whole site:
http://glassattic.com/polymer/contents.htm
Both of those pages will have an alphabetical navigation bar on the left side, so you could also check out at least these pages from inside the nav. bar:
…JEWELRY
…PENDANTS & Cording …especially “Loops & Holes”
…WIRE ….especially “Basic Wire Shapes”
…BEADS

Check out Fire Mountain. Besides selling virtually any and everything you would need as a supply, they have a gallery of designs, and the staff are very helpful. They have online chat (or was that email?) but also you can call them.
They also sell silver CLAY and the tools to form the jewelry and to fire (or “torch”) it. I plan on buying that set up this next spring.
Have fun!
