The metal beads are somehow magnetized and when you turn the box upside down the beads will then periodically drop and hit a bell that makes the sound of rain falling. I thought maybe it was called a rain box, but no it could not be that simple. It makes a lovely tinkling sound that is very relaxing.

They may have several names, but according to the catalog I have in front of me, they are called Rain Chimes
