How did jewelry enter human civilizations?
The oldest known jewelry dates to 100,000 BP, from Tata, Hungary (engraved shells, for decorative purposes, probably stringed together)…
This implies 2 things:
1) People had free-time.
2) Pre-humans, such as Neanderthal, had the capacity and inspiration to produce jewelry as well (Cro-Magnon didn't enter Europe until about 40,000 years ago).

Do you mean why?
To decorate/distinguish royalty or "upper-class" in general.
